It’s not uncommon for students to migrate to Toney McNair’s room at Indian River Middle School, even if it’s not time for class.

They seek out the choral music teacher for his knowledge, advice and positive words.

“He was always there whether we needed him for school work, or anything,” said Jacquilyn Davis, a former student who took three years of McNair’s classes.

This week, McNair, Virginia’s Teacher of the Year for 2016-17, was honored in Washington along with the nation’s other top educators.

The group joined President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence at the White House. They also had the chance to meet other lawmakers to send a message that they should prioritize education.
